A new book from House Industries

Known for its eclectic font collections, House Industries has been around the design world for more than 25 years. Apart from the beautiful mid-century style fonts, they have also designed everything from books, home decor, toys, stationery, t-shirts and apparel for women and men. They are now releasing a new book titled The Process is the Inspiration on May 30.

In their words: “With topics ranging from fonts and fashion to ceramics and space technology, this beautifully-useful volume offers a personal perspective on the origin of ideas for creative people in any field. Presented in the honest, authentic, and often irreverent style that you’ve come to expect from House Industries, The Process is the Inspiration is a collection of helpful lessons, stories and case studies that demonstrate how you can transform obsessive curiosity into personally satisfying and successful work … Most importantly, this book shows that there’s no sense in waiting for inspiration because inspiration is already waiting for you.”

Analogue Loaders animated film

This animated film is called Analogue Loaders, created by London-based director Raphael Vangelis. He specializes in design driven animation projects ranging from short films and music videos to TV commercials.

I love what he says about it: “This short film is my animated autobiography. I spend most of my life swearing at the computer because it’s crashed or isn’t working. Here, well known digital symbols are turned into something analogue and playful. The result is an homage to all the lost time we collectively spend in digital limbo in the hopes of sudden development on our screen.” So, true!

You can also watch the -very entertaining- making of the film here.

Lettering is the craft of drawing letters. It’s not a font that you can buy somewhere and type your text with. It’s more like an illustration with the shape of letters, that forms words and text. It’s the art of combining letter shapes, colors and composition to tell a story and send a message. The result is unique and custom. It starts by hand with pencil sketches, continues with inking and usually ends up on the computer where color and texture is added. Lettering can also be very versatile. It can be applied in advertising and editorial design, book covers, logos, packaging etc.

Please contact me for lettering commissions!

You can also find a selection of my work available on Etsy, in the form of art prints.

How amazing is the fantastic world of Travis Louie, an American artist from New York! Inspired by the Victorian and Edwardian age, the artist’s characters – humans, animals, weird beasts and otherworldly creatures – are depicted like having their formal portraits taken, but in unusual circumstances.

The artist says about his work: “I think the human race is full of misunderstandings based on people holding too close to their own cultures and being unable to embrace the idea that people can believe in other things and still get along in a reasonable sort of way.”  He adds that he created these characters as a sort of “veiled commentary on racism and the immigrant experience”.

The animation for Moby’s music video

This is the song “Are you lost in the world like me?” by Moby & the Void Pacific Choir. While I am not too crazy about the song, I find the video amazing! Created by Steve Cutts, a London-based illustrator and animator.

Moby himself says: “The video Steve Cutts made for ‘Are you lost in the world like me?’ is without question one of the best videos that’s ever been made for one of my songs.”

So many issues about our obsession with technology and social media, given with a “retro Mickey Mouse” style.

Just discovered Jeff Rogers, a New York City-based designer and letterer. He has a very distinct style of lettering which I love! He uses a combination of hand-drawn and digital techniques depending on the project, while having a very broad range of styles in his work.

He usually begins with pencil sketches and then, often, moves on to the computer to make vector outlines and add texture and color. In other cases he draws or paints by hand, creating a beautiful retro style reminiscent of vintage painted signage. He also plays around with sculpted letterforms by creating three-dimensional handmade letters.

Also, really amazing work with the GIF animations!

Dear Photograph, why did we watch TV so close’ – Simon

Dear Photograph started off as a small nostalgic blog created by Taylor Jones. Very soon it went viral.

The idea is simple: hold a picture from the past in the place where it was photographed and take a picture of the picture. Add a caption to explain the meaning it has for you and you may be part of a collection of thousands of other moments traveling back in time. So many actually, that the creator decided to turn them also into a book. Digital nostalgia of the highest order!
