These amazing portraits are all created with embroidery. For each artwork, what you see here is, the front and back of the same embroidery. Cayce Zavaglia is an Australian artist, who originally trained as a painter, but switched to embroidery a few years ago. The work is all hand sewn using cotton and silk thread or embroidery wool.
She says: “A few years ago, I turned one of my embroideries over and for the first time saw the possibilities of a new image and path for my work that had been with me in the studio for so long but had gone unnoticed. It was the presence of another portrait that visibly was so different from the meticulously sewn front image…but perhaps more psychologically profound. The haphazard beauty found in this verso image created a haunting contrast to the front image and was a world of loose ends, knots, and chaos that could easily translate into the world of paint.”
She then decided to return to painting and trying to render these very interesting “reverse” images.

On Saturday January 28 it is the Chinese New Year and this year it is the Year of the Rooster. These are just some nice illustrations for greeting cards by Japanese designers.
On a more artistic level, Japanese artist Feebee has created an imaginary beast, a fantastical combination of all 12 zodiac animals. The beast features parts from a rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig all in one. It was inspired by the piece “A Beast called Kotobuki” that was created as a woodblock print by an ukiyo-e artist from the late Edo period (1848–54).

I wish I was there to participate, and I am happy to hear that many of our friends and relatives did so. As a mom of three girls I think it is more important than ever “to show up and speak up” for women’s rights and equality for all, because unfortunately whatever happens in Trump-land affects us all.
A really exquisite label design for a series of wine called Ploes. This is the award-winning work of Beetroot design group for Amalagos Wineries in Greece. Very minimal, with stark colors… Reminds me of Hokusai’s “Great Wave“.
Hahaha! Designer Emily McDowell reminds us that it’s OKAY if you’ve already broken your New Year’s Resolution! This is actually a comic for Women in Real Life by Real Simple.

Lettering is the craft of drawing letters. It’s not a font that you can buy somewhere and type your text with. It’s more like an illustration with the shape of letters, that forms words and text. It’s the art of combining letter shapes, colors and composition to tell a story and send a message. The result is unique and custom. It starts by hand with pencil sketches, continues with inking and usually ends up on the computer where color and texture is added. Lettering can also be very versatile. It can be applied in advertising and editorial design, book covers, logos, packaging etc.

I love Clairice Gifford’s botanical style of illustration and lettering. The US-based designer creates beautiful flowery illustrations and combines them with intricate retro-style lettering, inspired by bright color, travel, typography, her Swedish heritage and anything mid-century modern. Also check out her great collection of colorful patterns.
I really like these two! Meet Frederick Phlox and Flora, two art prints by Nate Duval, one of the best rock poster designers and also one of my favorite illustrators. I can imagine them side by side in classic gold frames
